This fall, teachers and staff that are members of Vermillion Education Association (VEA) collected children’s books and funds to give back to the community. The books were delivered to Sanford Vermillion in December. Each baby born at Sanford Vermillion in 2023 will receive a children’s book as a part of the care package sent home with parents.
Inside each book is a label stating that babies who are read to every day are exposed to around 78,000 words each year. When the child is five, the child has already been exposed to 1.4 million words. This exposure is one of the easiest ways for parents to set their children up for academic success.
VEA wishes to thank all teachers and staff who donated books or money for this cause. A special thank you to the Vermillion Middle School Student Council who held a dodge ball tournament to raise $180 for the purchase of labels for the books. A generous donor also matched the funds raised at the dodge ball tournament. Suzanne Johnson, VEA secretary, is pictured making the donation.
